Sourced from a mature vineyard planted to the old Wente clone in a cool Napa Carneros site, the fruit was hand harvested on September 12, 2016, then whole cluster pressed into french oak barrels (70% new: Tremaux, Frere, Latour, Remond, and DAMY). Wente clone gives clusters with a mix of small and normal berries making for loose clusters and a modest crop with intense flavor. The wine fermented cold on gross lees in barrel with frequent stirring. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation to completion, and was aged for 15 months sur lie with battonage for the first year.
The wines opens with aromas of quince, lemon custard and toasted walnut. It continues to unfold in layers of perfume: torched sugar, cashew, cocoa, followed by richly layered fruit hinting at tangerine, meyer lemon and pear. The palate is dense, verging on viscous, yet supple and crisply refreshing. The flavors linger in a long intense finish, balancing weight with minerality. Enjoy now and over the next few years!
